I was a little disappointed by Against a Dark Background - another in the Culture series. I would recommend buying others of his before buying this one.

Complicity Another of his Dark Novels it is not recommended for the faint hearted as the body count rises. But is is an excellent thriller. You keep asking youself what part 'Cameron' has in the unfolding plot.

The Player of Games is an excellent novel in his Culture series. The second story after Consider Phlebas it is set several hundred years later. It goes into more detail about the workings of the Culture - a human/machine symbiotic society. People now live a life of ease and amongst them are Game Players. One of the greatest of which is Gurgeh who is drawn into playing a complex game where the winner becomes Emperor.

The first novel by Iain Banks, published in 1984.The Wasp Factory; A Novel is a stunning story. This is a Must Read. A horror story of exceptional quality. It describes the private wold of Frank who is 'unconventional'. It is told in the first person by Frank -

"Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different and more fundamental reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmeralda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again."
